  2. Legend of the galactic hero does a good job examining the flaws in democracy. I appreciate that it doesn't pander showing the evil empire and the heroic democratic side that just wants to bring freedom to everyone. No it goes full in and shows how a country can exploit a false ideal of justice just to satisfy their own war lust.

  3. I want to point out that the old guys trying to hire a middle schooler don't actually know she's a middle schooler. Everyone thinks she is much older since she works at the bar, she wanted her mother to reveal that since she's too coward to tell them herself. Because if all those dudes found out shes a middle schooler they would all back out.

I really don't get Scott's side of episode 10 of Hinamatsuri at all. The episode was hilarious to me and just as crazy and nonsense as the previous episodes so I dont get why this one in particular made him so grossed out.

  4. I don't know if I was the only one, but I got the feeling that Utako was pushing Hitomi out of her parents' house simply so that her mom wouldn't be able to stop her from working at Utako's bar, with no regards to the consequences for Hitomi. She does have that one line where she mentions she doesn't want to go back to how things were before she strong-armed Hitomi into working, and Nitta even comments on it.

  5. Hinamatsuri's absurdity got too uncomfortable on this episode for you Scott? That was me on episode one. The hell does Hina get off threatening her would-be caretaker with property damage and bodily harm? As far as I can tell, that issue never gets addressed, and I found that incredibly problematic.

  6. I don't mean to be a dick or anything… But Kirran seem less and less enthusiastic with each episode. Maybe he's going through some shit in his personal life, or is just working a lot and is tired… But especially this episode, it seemed like he just didn't want to be there. Might be just my impression, but I've been noticing it for a while now.

  7. Got a whale of a tale to tell ya, lads

A whale of a tale or two

'Bout the flappin' fish and the girls I've loved

On nights like this with the moon above

A whale of a tale and it's all true

    I swear by my tattoo
    ~

  8. Regarding the Golden Kamuy guy being like the Fuhrer from FMA, keep in mind that when he's not got his Wrath face on (or Pride face, in the alt timeline anime, which I'd say still holds up, just not quite on par with the proper story), he's kinda goofy. Remember that bit where he sneaks away from his bodyguards to visit Ed in the hospital, then climbs out the window when he hears them searching the building?

I've yet to watch the show (I can't do the weekly episode thing, I lose track of wtf is going on; for me your reviews are an indicator of if it's worth experiencing first hand (Inuyashiki), if it's better to get the summary of the parts that were good here (Juuni Taisen), or the ones that are best experienced through the pleasure of watching your pain (King's Game)), so you might be on the money with the Armstrong comparison, but…Bradley's iron heart had a fair bit of gold plating on it.

  9. But Scott, Lupin has almost always been episodic. The reason I didn't like Part 4 because it wasn't as episodic as usual. Not that having Lupin tell a story is bad, but the story and pacing of Part 4 sucked. I'm really liking Part 5's pacing and story arcs.

  10. As a Latin American I just wanted to point out, hearing Pepe Iglesias was the equivalent of witnessing someone dressed as Uncle Sam speak with a posh British accent. That was some heavy Spaniard accent (still way better than most anime portrayals of Spanish).

Also, I think Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a heavy criticism of the weaknesses of western democracy. Coming from an author born in postwar Japan, it's not critiquing the European Union (as was suggested in Kaiser's metaphor), it's a jab at the United States.

Finally, and this may sound extremely wrong, Phezzan seems like an allegory to the Jewish people, by which I mean the stereotype that they are a hidden economic force pulling strings behind the scenes.

  11. But Lupin has almost always been episodic. I mean, I love Part V, but it's been pretty much the sole exception in the entire franchise. I'd say my issue with the wrap up of the second arc is that they kind of just dropped the political angle I was really excited about in the penultimate episode. As for LoGH OVA, it's from the mid-to-late 80s until about the mid-nineties. If you're going to watch, avoid the next episode previews! They spoil big time. Probably because the people watching already read the books.
